Running a rural based private network behind not one, but two NAT gateways and the impending IPv4 address exhaustion have led me tinkering with IPv6. We need outside access to at least one machine on that network. I’ve have been experimenting with Hurricane Electric tunnels and 6to4. So far both seem to work fine over one NAT but we had some problems with the he.net tunnels over two NAT gateways and I’m currently giving 6to4 a try. It’s trivial to set up. Here’s a nice article explaining how to do it on Debian based Linux systems. Yes, that includes Ubuntu. If you’re behind NAT, specify your private IPv4 address as the local endpoint.

Update: 6to4 works fine over one NAT but seemingly not over two of them. The he.net tunnel sometimes works, but most of the time it doesn’t, so I applied for a SixXS account to try out AYIYA. This approach tunnels IPv6 into layer 4 protocols such as UDP or TCP.

Pe foarte scurt, în Camera Deputaţilor se discută un proiect de lege menit să modifice OUG 57/2007. În forma actuală, prevederile acestui proiect de lege ar înlesni exploatările forestiere, construcţiile şi învestiţiile în parcurile naţionale, vânătoarea, pescuitul, recoltarea ciupercilor şi a plantelor medicinale. În schimb modificările aduse legii vor interzice camparea înafara locurilor special amenajate şi părăsirea traseelor turistice. Radu Mititean de la CCN a publicat o analiză mai pe larg. Să presupunem că ar fi o practică general acceptată să cânte lumea în locuri publice. Să presupunem de asemenea că îmi place să cânt la muzicuţă; dar neştiind să cânt, fac doar zgomot îngrozitor care deranjează oamenii din jur. Ar trebui să fiu lăsat în pace să fac zgomot nestingherit şi să deranjez în continuare lumea, să mi se interzică să mai cânt sau să fiu obligat să o fac doar în camere special amenajate, antifonate, din care să nu deranjez pe nimeni?

De fapt, e o idee nemaipomenită. De acum, când voi mai fi deranjat de vreun fumător, am să scot muzicuţa şi am să încep să suflu aleator în acest instrument muzical. Dacă mă va întreba cineva de ce fac asta, am să motivez că sunt la rândul meu deranjat de fumul de ţigară la fel cum persoanele care produc acest fum sunt deranjate de zgomotul făcut de mine.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin has signed an order requiring the federal government to move from proprietary technologies to free/open source software. Starting with the second quarter or 2012, Russian federal agencies will be transitioning to Linux-based systems. A couple of days ago, while browsing Tech Review we encountered an article about a new theory that suggests gravity emerges from quantum information. Wait! Wasn’t a version of this the central idea of the novel Definitely Maybe by the Strugatsky brothers? Indeed it was. In order to maximise entropy, the Universe is pulling tricks on us. According to Erik Verlinde’s theory, it does this by generating a force that redistributes matter. The mysterious force in the novel turns out to be gravity in Verlinde’s theory. Both ideas arise as a consequence to the second law of thermodynamics.

There’s an interesting article about Vivian Maier in Chicago Magazine, followed by a response from Blake Andrews. Maier’s work has recently been discovered by former real estate agent John Maloof at an antique furniture auction. The rest of her story you can read in the article and on Maloof’s blog.

Update: There’s also a video about Vivian Maier on the WTTV website and there will be an exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center. We found out about it from TOP editor, Mike Johnston. Nick Turpin, who also wrote about this, informed us that Maloof is seeking funding for a documentary about Maier’s life. Additionally, we found this article at the NYT lens blog. I improvised upon Haalo’s spiced chickpea and onion soup by using parsley instead of baby spinach and rocket. A carrot was also added into the mix and everything was seasoned with majoram, basil, a bit of cayenne pepper and Hungarian Kalocsai paprika. Erős Pista was used in place of Harissa. This variant has a more European flavour and you can find most ingredients easily.
